Designer Sean Kim came up with the idea for the Wavy Lamp when he ordered a paper lamp that arrived with a torn lampshade. Instead of waiting for a new shade, he learned Grasshopper software, bought a 3D printer and created his own 3D-printed lampshade.
“I've been interested in 3D printing and other types of digital fabrication ever since I encountered the work of Nervous Systems,” says Kim. “The type of 3D printing I use for the Wavy Lamp is called Fused Deposition Modeling, where a thermoplastic is deposited layer by layer to create a certain shape or geometry.”
“PLA is a bio-derived plastic made from fermented plant starch,” says Kim. “That makes the material interesting to me, but what we like about our supplier is that they’re taking the bioplastic and recycling it, so we get much further from the same initial resources.”
Sean Kim is the founder of the Brooklyn-based company Wooj. The brand utilizes a combination of robotics and craft manufacturing techniques to create products at a low cost without exploitative labor. Kim loves 3D printing because it empowers ideas to become physical products in a matter of hours instead of weeks, and eliminates the need for mass production for factories. His Wavy Lamp has become a social media hit.
